Onias III

High priest at Jerusalem, supplanted by his brother Jason under Antiochus IV (2 Macc 4:7). 2 Maccabees has him killed near Antioch at Menelaus's instigation (4:33–35), c. 171 BC (Driver, after Schürer); Josephus's Jewish War (1.1.1) instead has "Onias the high priest" flee to Ptolemy and found the Heliopolis temple. Disputed (review open).
